Yes, sexism still exists, and yes, it’s still a massive problem that must be addressed.
I was reading this article on Buzzfeed today, titled “32 Everyday Things Women Do That Men Don’t Have To Worry About,” and I was absolutely furious, because every single thing on the list was true.
Let’s start with the first theme: Being afraid of existing in our own fucking bodies because we’re women. These are numbers 1–8 and 12–14. It involves precautions a woman takes when walking alone at night, such as carrying car keys like weapons, making sure you’re not being followed, teaching yourself how to walk quickly away without making it look like you’re trying to escape, and setting up systems with friends so that they’ll be aware that you are in a situation where you might be attacked (which basically happens every other day). Other safety precautions involve avoiding certain situations or places entirely to avoid harassment, surrounding yourself with other women to protect yourself, guarding your drink religiously so that you’re not drugged and raped, and not defending yourself out of fear that you’ll be attacked by an emasculated dude.
