So, I just read the Hunger Games series for the first time over the past two days (I know; I’m late to the party), and I have several choice things to say about the series.
(And yes, there will be spoilers!)
So, firstly, I don’t know whether Divergent or The Hunger Games came first, but whichever came second passed the line from inspired by and happily skipped right into ripped off from. As someone who’s already read Divergent, I found the plots eerily similar: The main character, a sixteen-year-old girl who has an undeniable “fiery spark,” grows up in a dystopia and is thrown into a life-threatening situation that she has no control over. She learns to fight and defeats the obstacles in front of her, including killing other people her own age along with those in power, and as the books continue, they become exponentially more depressing as basically anyone the main character cares about dies a gruesome, painful death, occasionally complete with a brief pre-death monologue. (Oh, and there is also at least one “I-would-die-for-you” romance involved, of course.)
Anyway, as the books continue, a rebel movement against the screwed-up government forms with the main character reluctantly placed at the face of it. As the main character’s friends and loved ones continue to die, the main character slowly descends into madness and starts suffering with…
