Battle: A Short Story: Part I

Seven-year-old Anna flashes me a gap-toothed grin. I smile back, and then remembere how she’d lost her two front teeth.

She came to us like that, four years old and stumbling wide-eyed from a broken home. She hadn’t known what she was capable of — only what she was leaving behind: neglectful parents, vicious siblings, and bullies at school who routinely used her as a punching bag — one day pushing her so hard she fell and broke her two front teeth.

Anna has learned to maneuver around her teeth pretty easily by now, though, and Dr. Stacy has confirmed that her adult teeth will grow in normally.

Most of the children here have been given to us by their parents, when they realized there was something…off about them. Anna had it easy — when she developed telekinesis, her parents were never around and she could practice her powers with impunity. Other children, however, were found out by their parents and shipped off to the facility, or else dumped onto the streets once it was clear that they could never be normal.

Next to Anna sits Clara, an interesting case. It took us a while to pinpoint exactly what she can do. Though she can read minds, she can also manipulate them to a certain extent, subtly coloring opinions without the owner’s realization or creating snap decisions.
