I remember the morning of November 9, 2016. I went up to my parents’ bedroom.

“Who won?” I asked.

“Trump,” my dad said.

“Fuck,” I replied, and went downstairs without another word. On the way, I lost the remainder of my strength and just sat down on the stairs. “America’s screwed,” I muttered to myself, burying my head in my hands and fighting back tears.

It didn’t matter that multiple women had made credible claims of sexual assault. It didn’t matter if he was a racist, a xenophobe, a misogynist. It didn’t matter that he had no political experience. He’d been voted in. I’d never felt so helpless.

This evening, after a peaceful Shabbat (Sabbath for Jews) had ended, I was scrolling through my friends’ group chat.

Kavanaugh got voted in.

I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t.

I Googled, Kavanaugh confirmed. Within seconds, I was clicking on a Fox News article that calmly relayed news of my worst nightmare.

It didn’t matter that three women had accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, the first two both extremely credible claims. (I’m reserved about the third.) It didn’t matter that he has no respect for women. After all, who attacks a woman and shoves his dick into the impaired, unconsenting face of a second…
