Q&A: Why do some women send love letters to serial killers?

Have you ever met someone who dislikes everyone, yet somehow likes you?

A teacher who yells at everyone, yet somehow likes you. A peer who bullies everyone but enjoys having you around. Someone who complains about everyone but laughs at your jokes. Someone who is repulsed by everyone but attracted to you.

You don’t have to like the person, but they can still make you feel special. People like feeling special, and women may be so desperate to find that in a romantic partner that they are willing to sell their soul to the devil for that kind of acceptance.

There are two ways this could go: Either the woman feels like she’s “healing” the serial killer, or she loves feeling special.

If she feels like she’s “healing” him, it’s because he always looks insane or depressed in pictures, and she feels like she’s the only one who can fix him, and then they can live happily ever after. Yippee.

And then there’s the second reason: feeling special.

A woman may also love the feeling of being in kahoots with a serial killer. They’ve killed plenty of people, but they wouldn’t kill me, the woman thinks. It’s the same logic with cheating: All the other women just weren’t good enough. I’m different. I’m not like other girls. I’m special.

Which is why it hurts so much to learn that you’re wrong.
