I have no problem “surviving” Valentine’s day. I’ve gone whole days without realizing that it’s Valentine’s anyway. There’s nothing to survive when it’s literally no struggle.

I’m Single This Valentine’s Day and I Really Couldn’t Care Less

I’m flipping through Snapchat. Suddenly, there are tons of heart filters. There are stories either with suggestions about what to do with your “bae” for Valentine’s Day, or suggestions on how to go through it alone as a “strong, independent woman.”

Ugh, I think. It’s that time of the year.

People are usually (emphasis on usually) either grateful and sappy that it’s Valentine’s Day, or tearful and melodramatic. Their emotions on and surrounding the day usually involve whether they are “single” and “taken.”

When did relationship status matter so much? And when did things get so exhausting?

You might be concerned that all of your friends are getting partners, but you’re not your friends. You’re you. If you’re single and your friends have partners, that’s more than fine. You can have fun with your friends, with your family, and with yourself anytime you please, whether or not it’s on “The Day.”

Also, there’s nothing tragic about not having a partner on Valentine’s Day. It’s just a day designated to chocolate and flower companies, with a side effect of being “romantic.”…
