I’m eating Nachos in tenth grade English class, oblivious to the obscene amount of noise I am creating. I eat loudly already, but the overly crunchy chips and their tendency to get tiny bits of flavor onto my fingers isn’t helping.

It’s in the first week of school, and my teacher is still getting a taste of what kind of personality each of his students has, testing our boundaries, experimentally throwing in jokes. “Brooke,” he says, stopping the class, “can you chew any more loudly?”

I look up. “Well, yes,” I reply. “Do you want me to?”
