Battle: A Short Story: Part IV

Air whistles past my ears, vibrates inside my skull, and a scream is ripped from my lips and carried away by the air, unheard. Before I know it, my feet hit the ground, hard. I go sprawling, and so does everyone except Violet, who has practiced keeping her feet after hundreds of teleportations.

Violet braces her feet against the snow before straightening and bringing a hand to her ear. She flicks a switch to activate the communication device and says, “Successful teleportation.”

“Nice job,” Gwen says. “Now, we’d prefer if you brought Ray back alive with as little damage as possible, but you are authorized to use whichever amount of force you deem necessary to protect yourselves. Don’t get too close — we know he can injure people at close range — and things can get deadly if he catches you. The volt guns can be helpful, because they can knock him out, but they run on RED cards, which are extremely temperamental. They may get jammed.”

“Do you know where Ray is?” Lara grunts as she pulls Anna to her feet.

“Somewhere in the base. We have information detailing this as his next target. All of the officials are in the southwest corner of the base. They’re in a low-set brick building with several guards outside. The idea is that he’ll have to face all of them at once. This time, he can’t pick off any stragglers. We’re
